Can Student-Built Rockets Benefit Science?

As international student rocketry competitions showed, there are at least 150 student teams building and launching their own rockets all around the world. Most of the built rockets have experimental compartments, enabling performing almost any experiment onboard. This offers a huge hidden potential. During the lecture, the possibility of using student-developed rockets as a sustainable tool for scientific research will be discussed. Currently available space research platforms will be presented and compared i.a. in terms of costs of usage. The advantages and disadvantages of using student-developed rockets will be introduced and the recommended method of experiment designing and development for the such platform will be presented. The BeeGs project, examining the impact of rocket flight on honey bees (Apis mellifera), will be shown as an exemplary case study.
The lecture is based on the author's experience in rocket payload designing, gained during her membership in the AGH Space Systems Students' Association as a Rocket Payload and Stratospheric Balloon Team Leader.
